A delicate emergency medical transport has just concluded, allowing the transfer of a 35-year-old man, in imminent danger of life, from the Galatina Military Airport (Lecce) to Ciampino thanks to a Gulfstream G650 of the 31st Wing of the Air Force.
The man required an immediate transfer from the “Vito Fazzi” Hospital in Lecce to the Sant’Andrea University Hospital in Rome, where he could receive specialized care not available in the Salento area.
A Mission Activated in Minutes
The life-saving flight was activated at the request of the Prefecture of Lecce by the Air Force's Top Situation Room, a structure of the Air Squadron Command responsible for the operational management of these missions. The 31st Wing, an elite unit also dedicated to urgent medical transports, was immediately alerted.
After completing readiness procedures, the aircraft took off from Ciampino to reach the Galatina military airport, where the patient was transferred on board under the continuous assistance of a specialized medical team.
Arrival in Ciampino and Transfer to Sant’Andrea
After 5:30 PM, the G650 landed at Ciampino airport. Awaiting him was an ambulance that quickly transported the patient to the Sant’Andrea Hospital for subsequent urgent admission.
As required by regulations, the flight was authorized by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, which coordinates the use of state aircraft for missions of public interest.
A Constant Commitment to Serving the Country
Emergency medical transport is one of the institutional activities carried out by the Air Force for the benefit of the community. The flight units of the Armed Force ensure operational readiness 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, even in adverse weather conditions, ensuring:
- transport of people in imminent danger of life
- transfer of organs and medical teams
- movement of ambulances and urgent medical materials
Every year, hundreds of flight hours are employed for these missions by dedicated units: the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa, and the helicopters of the 15th Wing of Cervia.
A few days ago, on Sunday, November 30, the Air Force completed another very delicate medical mission: a one-month-old baby girl was urgently transferred from Cagliari to Milan-Linate to receive immediate specialized care.
A silent but fundamental activity, which continues to represent one of the most concrete faces of the Air Force's closeness to citizens.
