The Italian incursori are changing home: after over 60 years the 9th Paratrooper Assault Regiment “Col Moschin” leaves the historic Caserma Vannucci to move to Pisa. The presence of the unit in Livorno began in the early '60s, when the Paratrooper Saboteurs Battalion was formed at Vannucci, the historical nucleus from which the current unit descends.

The transfer to Pisa of the command offices of the first special forces unit of the Italian Army is not just an administrative detail. It is a step that changes the territorial organization of some Army structures in Tuscany and will have practical effects on spaces, logistics, and the distribution of functions between the two cities.

The news mainly concerns the command: the offices of the Col Moschin Regiment will leave the “Vannucci” barracks in Livorno to be hosted in the military complex “Dario Vitali” in San Piero a Grado (Pisa), the operational headquarters of the COMFOSE (Army Special Forces Command).

Why Pisa: concentration and shorter chain of command

The central point of the project is centralization. In the Pisa area, the aim is to bring together the regiments coordinated by COMFOSE, reducing dispersion and duplication of functions.

Simply put: Pisa becomes a coordination hub, with potential management advantages (meetings, planning, procedures, interactions between commands).

One of the practical elements mentioned is the location: the new command headquarters would be “strategic” also due to its proximity to the Boccadarno area, where the incursori training base (BAI) used for amphibious and underwater activities is located. This point explains why the choice is not random: it attempts to bring command functions closer to an already existing logistical-operational context.

The building project: 5.8 million to refurbish the “501” building

The new Incursori command is expected to be housed in the “501” building of the “Vitali” complex, an old structure previously used by the area connected to Camp Darby and now described as in degraded conditions. The plan includes the creation of:

  • offices and classrooms
  • warehouses and common areas
  • changing rooms and services
  • system refurbishments
  • seismic improvement interventions
  • reorganization of internal spaces for command needs

The tender procedure for the executive design is indicated as expiring soon; the construction sites are estimated between late 2026 and early 2027, with a work time expected to be around 250 days.

A technical choice, with (positive) consequences also for the Folgore

The transfer is part of the broader framework of the “Great Infrastructures – Green Barracks” program and a more general rationalization of military presences between Pisa and Livorno.

The operation could have organizational advantages also for the Folgore Paratrooper Brigade: freeing up spaces at the Vannucci would help “decongest” the barracks and prepare for a subsequent redistribution of functions currently spread over other locations (for example, the “Rugiadi”, where the 184th RCST “Nembo” is currently located).

In essence, the relocation of the “Ninth” command is not just a move: it is also a piece to put order in the distribution of barracks and units on the territory.
