Brigadier General Roberto Vergori will be the Chief of General Office of the new Chief of SME, Lt. Gen. Carmine Masiello. Vergori brings with him extensive military experience and a deep commitment to serving the country.
Born in Lecce on September 28, 1971, he began his journey at the Military Academy of Modena in 1990, attending the 172nd course, completing his training at the School of Application in Turin. Since then, he has served in various command positions within the Italian Army, demonstrating exceptional leadership and unparalleled dedication.
Among his previous assignments, he commanded the 2nd Paratrooper Battalion "Tarquinia" of the 187th Paratrooper Regiment "Folgore", leading the preparation phase as a maneuver unit of the Joint Rapid Reaction Force (JRRF).
He was also Commander of the Joint Task Force “Taormina 1” during the “G7” held in TAORMINA and Head of Division J3 (Operations) of the COVI (Joint Operational Command).
As a Colonel, he served as Commander of the 5th Infantry Regiment "Aosta" and promoted to Brigadier General, he was, from 2021 to 2023, Commander of the Folgore Paratrooper Brigade.
During his career, General Vergori has actively participated in out-of-area operations in places like Kosovo, Afghanistan, Lebanon, and Libya, acquiring a wide range of skills in the field of airborne troops.
General Carmine Masiello, whose commitment and determination are well known in the military landscape, is actively shaping a top-level team.
The appointment of Vergori as Chief of General Office is a clear sign of his excellence-oriented vision, strengthening the top of the armed forces with outstanding individuals ready to face future challenges with determination and skill, also emphasizing the desire to ensure that the Italian Army is led by highly qualified and dedicated leaders, preparing the armed forces to achieve unprecedented levels of prestige and success. However, we believe that the issue should be viewed from another perspective.
The choices of Defense Minister Guido Crosetto to appoint key figures from the paratrooper specialty to top positions in the Italian Army represent an unequivocal signal of change in the country's military strategy.
With the appointment of General Masiello as Chief of Defense Staff (SME), and, already from October, of General Iannucci as the new Chief of Staff of the Minister of Defense, there is a shift towards a more dynamic and flexible approach in managing the challenges that the armed forces will face.
Crosetto's choices could herald a more proactive and adaptable defense vision, capable of responding promptly and innovatively to the complexities of the international scenario.
