Following the severe landslide that hit the town of Niscemi, causing the main city routes to be impassable, the Italian Army intervened to ensure the continuity of connections and the safety of the population. At the request of the Prefecture of Caltanissetta, the soldiers of the 4th Engineer Regiment Sappers belonging to the Brigata Aosta took action.
This was announced by the Armed Forces on their official Facebook page. Minister Guido Crosetto also assured on X the maximum availability of military means and personnel to provide help and assistance to the population.

Improving road access and preventing isolation
The engineers are already operational in the area with the aim of restoring, as quickly as possible, an alternative road access. In particular, a bypass will be created to connect Provincial Roads 10 and 12, thus avoiding the isolation of the town center, currently threatened by the instability of the rocky spur on which the city stands.
The soldiers of the 4th Engineer Regiment Sappers of the Brigata Aosta, a unit based in Palermo and also engaged in the Ionian area of Messina, participated in an operational meeting at the Municipal Operations Center (COC) to coordinate interventions with the civil authorities.

Agricultural tracks transformed into passable roads
As explained by Lieutenant Colonel Giuseppe Genovesi, the Army's action will not be limited to the main bypass. Thanks to the Engineering Corps' machinery, the agricultural tracks surrounding Niscemi will be adapted and transformed into passable roads, allowing vehicle transit and providing concrete support to the local economy, which has been severely affected by the emergency.
Colonel Pasquale Mannino, commander of the 4th Engineer Regiment Sappers, stated that in this first phase the commitment is expected to last about ten days. Meanwhile, evaluations on possible subsequent developments continue: in-depth discussions are underway with the Municipality and the Civil Protection Department to define the technical choices to be adopted.

The role of the Engineering Corps in national emergencies
The intervention in Niscemi once again confirms the fundamental role of the Army's Engineering Corps in support operations for the population in the event of natural disasters. Alongside operational capabilities in the military field, the Engineering Corps units represent an essential tool of the State for the restoration of infrastructure, securing the territory, and supporting affected communities.
In Sicily, as in other areas of the country, the synergy between civil institutions and the Armed Forces proves decisive in tackling complex emergency situations, ensuring rapid action, technical expertise, and a concrete presence on the ground.
