The emergency medical transport carried out by the Italian Air Force to safeguard the life of a newborn just two months old concluded with the landing at the Ciampino military airport.
The young patient, hospitalized at the San Vincenzo hospital in Taormina and in imminent danger of life, needed to reach the Bambino Gesù pediatric hospital in Rome as quickly as possible. The transfer was carried out this week with a Gulfstream G650 of the 31st Wing of Ciampino, on board of which a specialized medical team also traveled.
The flight, as provided by the procedures for this type of mission, was authorized by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, which manages and coordinates the activities of the State aircraft fleet. The activation took place at the request of the Prefecture of Messina to the Top Situations Room of the Air Squadron Command in Milan of the Italian Air Force, which immediately involved the 31st Wing.
After the necessary procedures were carried out by the military crew, the G650 took off from Ciampino heading to Catania-Fontanarossa, where the newborn was boarded along with the medical team. The aircraft departed as soon as possible towards Rome and, after landing in Ciampino, an ambulance completed the transfer to the hospital facility.
Three interventions in a few days for the Italian Air Force
This is the second intervention of this type carried out this week departing from Taormina and the third nationwide, confirming the operational readiness guaranteed for the protection of the most fragile patients.
The emergency medical transport is one of the institutional tasks carried out by the Italian Air Force for the benefit of the community: the flight units are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with means and crews capable of operating even in complex weather conditions, ensuring urgent transport not only of people in life-threatening situations but also of organs, medical teams, or ambulances.
Every year, hundreds of flight hours are dedicated to this type of intervention by the aircraft of the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa, and the helicopters of the 15th Wing of Cervia.
