The Associazione Nazionale Paracadutisti d’Italia (ANPDI) has announced that Gen. C.A. (CC Par.) Carmelo Burgio has accepted the position of Director of the Italian Military Parachuting History Study Center, succeeding Prof. Federico Ciavattone, who resigned.

The Study Center, one of the most recent initiatives of the ANPDI, aims to promote the history of the Paratroopers specialty and, more broadly, Italian military history. Over the years, it has developed dissemination and in-depth activities, including publications, conferences, and reconnaissance on the sites of war events (battle tour).

The Association expressed gratitude to Prof. Ciavattone for his work and contribution to enhancing the history of the Specialty, wishing him well for his personal and professional future, also in light of his recent appointment as an Officer of the Selected Reserve.

General Burgio gained significant experience in the paratrooper units of the Corps, starting with his assignment to the 1st Carabinieri Paratrooper Battalion “Tuscania” in the early 1980s, a period when the unit was still part of the Folgore Paratrooper Brigade. During his career, he held operational and command positions, including participation in the initial phases of the establishment of the Special Intervention Group (GIS).

He also held institutional and territorial positions, including leading the President of the Republic's escort and various commands in the territorial area. He concluded active service in 2022 with the rank of Lieutenant General, as Interregional Carabinieri Commander “Podgora” in Rome.

Among his overseas operational experiences are assignments in Lebanon, Afghanistan, and Iraq. He is the author of publications on historical-military topics, with particular attention to the Carabinieri paratroopers component, and collaborates with the Historical Newsletter of the Carabinieri Corps and other online publications.

His accolades include, among others, the Knight's Cross of the Military Order of Italy, the Gold Cross of Merit of the Corps, the Bronze Medal for Valor of the Corps, two Bronze Crosses of Army Merit, and the Commander Cross of Merit of the Italian Republic.

Gen. Burgio has always been an ANPDI member and has also gained part of his parachuting experience in the associative field.
