Saturday, April 12 will be a date destined to enter the history of parachuting. At the Aeroclub of Ferrara, also home to the Scuola Paracadutismo Ferrara, a spectacular event will take place: the launch of the largest flag ever flown by a parachutist, a full 3300 square meters of Italian tricolor.

Attempting the feat will be Paolo Filippini, lieutenant colonel of the Italian Army retired, formerly stationed at the Centro Addestramento di Paracadutismo, multiple world champion in parachuting, who will be supported by the local parachuting school team for technical and logistical support. The main launch will be preceded by a symbolic descent with a 1600 sqm flag, previously used by Filippini, to test weather conditions and ideally pass the baton to the new, gigantic version.

The flag, made with an ultra-lightweight technical fabric, will be attached to a specially designed tandem parachute to support about 130 kg of weight, the tricolor alone. During the flight, two parachutists from the school will record video footage to document every phase of the event: from takeoff to deployment in the air, until landing on the ground.

Paolo Filippini, born in 1961, originally from the province of Siena, has lived for four years in Catena di Quarrata, in the province of Pistoia, thanks to the love that led him to move. He is a true legend of international parachuting. In his record:

  • 11 times Italian Individual Champion
  • 7 World Team Champion titles
  • 2 World Individual Champion titles
  • 2 individual world records
  • 4 Gold Medals for athletic valor from CONI
  • 2 Gold Crosses for Army Merit
  • 1 Gold Star for sports merit from the International Military Sports Council

An extraordinary career that has helped write indelible pages of military and national sports.

On April 12, in Ferrara, the whole of Italy will be able to admire his next feat: an immense tricolor, suspended between sky and earth, which will become a symbol of courage, pride, and passion.
