Perdasdefogu, June 20, 2025 – The exercise Giaguaro concluded today at the Salto di Quirra Interforce Experimental and Training Range (PISQ), an important training activity organized by the 152nd Infantry Regiment "Sassari". The aim of the exercise was to enhance the reconnaissance and operational capabilities of the units under the Southern Operational Forces Command (COMFOP Sud).
Phases and Participants
The exercise was structured in multiple phases, with increasing levels of complexity. Participating units included the 6th and 8th Bersaglieri Regiments, the 1st "Granatieri di Sardegna" Regiment, and the 5th Engineer Regiment, the latter also engaged in amphibious support operations in the artificial basin of Flumendosa.
Activities and Techniques Performed
During the activity, the units faced high-intensity realistic tactical scenarios. The exercises included:
- Area reconnaissance and target acquisition in complex environments
- Overcoming natural vertical obstacles using the double rope technique
- Crossing watercourses under difficult conditions
- Sessions dedicated to Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC), essential for combat rescue
Additionally, scenarios involving threats from Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), control and management of indirect fire, as well as specialized reconnaissance and surveillance operations were tested.
Coordination and Safety
The 152nd Infantry Regiment "Sassari" assumed the role of coordinator for the entire training cycle, ensuring the safety, command, and control of operations. It was also responsible for evaluating the activities, supported by expert personnel from the reconnaissance platoon and the sniper team.
The highlight of the exercise was a continuous 72-hour phase, during which the reconnaissance platoons practiced technical-tactical exploration procedures, also facing medical emergency simulations and other complex operations.
The exercise concluded with an After Action Review (AAR) session, during which observations were shared and areas for improvement identified. This moment of reflection and analysis represented an important opportunity for professional growth, highlighting the synergy between the involved units and confirming the high level of preparation and interoperability of the exercised units.
The Giaguaro exercise had a significant impact on improving the reconnaissance capabilities of the COMFOP Sud forces, strengthening the operational skills and effectiveness of all involved units, in a high-intensity and constantly changing context.
