QUANTICO, VIRGINIA – In a move highlighting the growing threat of drones on the modern battlefield, the Marine Corps Systems Command has awarded an urgent contract worth 9.5 million dollars to the British company SteelRock Technologies. The goal is the immediate acquisition of the NightFighter Mini jammers, compact tools designed to neutralize small UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) at the squad level.
The urgency of the order is evident in the contract terms: delivery of all systems and related spare parts is required by August 25, 2026, with the entire amount already allocated from the fiscal year 2024 procurement funds.
Elite Technology in Pocket Format
The NightFighter Mini represents the pinnacle of miniaturization in the SteelRock product family. Despite its small size, the system does not sacrifice computing power or signal effectiveness.
- Weight: 2 kg (battery included).
- Dimensions: 25 cm (length) x 15 cm (width).
- Frequencies: Covers 4 preset bands, including Wi-Fi protocols and military spectral frequencies.
- Range: Defined as Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) — if the operator can see the drone, they can engage it.
- Versatility: Can be mounted directly on a service rifle or carried as a sidearm.
Two Missions, One Operator
The system was selected to support the O-CsUAS (Organic-Counter small Unmanned Aerial Systems) program, focused on the immediate protection of infantry units. The NightFighter Mini fulfills two critical functions:
- Direct UAV Mitigation: Allows a single Marine to take down the drone threat without relying on specialized teams or heavy equipment.
- Tactical Electronic Interdiction (TEI): Provides area protection by disrupting the command and navigation signals of adversary drones in a specific sector.

The Context: Lessons from the Conflict in Ukraine
The decision of the Marine Corps reflects the radical changes observed in recent conflicts, particularly in Ukraine. The massive use of modified commercial drones and FPV (First-Person View) drones has shown that infantry formations without organic anti-drone capabilities are extremely vulnerable.
The NightFighter Mini acts by flooding radio frequencies with interference, severing the link between the pilot and the drone. This forces the aircraft to execute emergency procedures — such as hovering or forced landing — effectively neutralizing the reconnaissance or kinetic attack threat.
