Modern battlefields are places of unprecedented speed and saturation. Small unmanned aerial systems (UAS) can attack in swarms of hundreds, overwhelming defenses and striking before human decision cycles can conclude. Faced with this threat, air defense operators find themselves with more targets than they can track or defeat, leaving US forces vulnerable. Current command and control (C2) systems, not designed for this type of combat, fail to process data or execute kill-chain decisions at the speed necessary to neutralize autonomous and distributed attacks.

Revolution in Anti-Drone Defense

To tackle this critical challenge, the United States Army has selected Anduril Industries for the Integrated Battle Command System Maneuver (IBCS-M) program. This choice establishes Lattice, Anduril's software platform, as the next-generation fire control solution for Counter-UAS (C-UAS) missions.

IBCS-M is designed to act as the backbone of command, control, and integration for a wide range of anti-drone systems. It allows a single operator to simultaneously manage multiple threats, fusing sensor data, automating fire control, and rapidly integrating new capabilities. The primary goal is to reduce the operator's workload and drastically compress the time between target detection and defeat.

Stunning Results at Yuma Proving Grounds

The power of Lattice, the platform behind IBCS-M, was recently demonstrated in a seven-day trial at Yuma Proving Grounds.

  • Hybrid Integration: Lattice was able to integrate a previously undisclosed sensor and effector into the system in just a few hours.
  • Perfect Precision: The demonstration included live-fire interceptions that resulted in a success of four kills out of four.
  • Advanced Capabilities: Advanced functionalities were showcased, such as autonomy-enhanced fire control, distributed tracking, and kill-chain optimization.

Alex Miller, CTO of the US Army, emphasized the need for a paradigm shift: "We can no longer think of C-UAS as something static or on the same level as ballistic missile defense. It must be maneuverable, which means it must be software-centric and, above all, adaptable." Miller also highlighted the need for the system to support both a commander at a forward operating base and a platoon leader on the move with sensors distributed across many vehicles.

A Unified Command and Control Ecosystem

The IBCS-M program is part of a broader modernization initiative aimed at rethinking how the Army conducts combat. Traditional systems were built for an era of predictability; today's world demands an infrastructure that is open, extensible, and capable of evolving at machine speed.
