Fincantieri has officially announced the launch of Spectre, a new class of high-speed, multi-role unmanned surface vehicles (USV). The operation will be managed through the U.S. subsidiary Fincantieri Marine Group (Fmg) in collaboration with Saildrone, a global pioneer in autonomous surface vehicles.
The announcement, made during the Sea-Air-Space exhibition in National Harbor, Maryland, marks a decisive moment in Fincantieri's industrial strategy. The goal is to integrate advanced unmanned solutions into its Defense portfolio, responding to the growing international demand for autonomous platforms capable of operating on a large scale with very high reliability standards.

Technology and Performance: the silent giant
Spectre represents the largest, fastest, and most performant platform ever developed by Saildrone. Each unit boasts a length of about 52 meters, a displacement of about 250 tons, and can reach a maximum speed of 30 knots.
Specifically designed for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) operations, the Spectre class combines exceptional autonomy with an ultra-silent acoustic profile. Despite its size, the vehicle ensures low observability and high flexibility, allowing for rapid reconfigurations for alternative mission profiles according to the operational needs of international partners.
Production and Strategic Vision
The construction of the units will take place at the Fincantieri shipyards in Wisconsin, leveraging existing infrastructure and the group's established experience in the serial production of aluminum ships. This industrialized approach allows for scalable and reliable supply, essential for the operational readiness of the U.S. Navy and allied forces.

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and General Manager of Fincantieri, emphasized the importance of the project:
"Spectre represents another step in Fincantieri's transformation journey from a traditional shipbuilder to an industrial systems integrator for the naval forces of the future. The combination of Saildrone's leadership, our execution capability, and our production presence in the United States allows us to transform innovation into operational solutions that are readily deployable."
A scalable system for future threats
Developed in collaboration with leading defense technology providers, Spectre is designed to integrate a wide range of mission systems and payloads. This feature ensures that the platform can quickly adapt to evolving geopolitical scenarios and emerging threats, consolidating Fincantieri's long-term commitment to the U.S. and international defense market.
