DAMASCUS – The United States has intensified its offensive against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria, launching a new massive wave of retaliatory airstrikes. The operation, confirmed by the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), comes as a direct response to last month's ambush in Palmyra, in which two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter lost their lives.
The attack and the objectives
According to the official statement from CENTCOM, the raids began around 12:30 PM (Eastern Standard Time) on Saturday, January 10. American air forces, supported by local partners, struck multiple strategic ISIS targets in various areas of Syria.
The operation is an integral part of the mission called "Operation Hawkeye Strike", launched by the Trump administration to dismantle the remaining cells of the terrorist group and avenge the December attack. On that occasion, Iowa National Guard sergeants Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar and William Nathaniel Howard, along with civilian interpreter Ayad Mansoor Sakat, were killed in an ambush by Islamic State militants.

The warning from Washington
The words from the Central Command were unequivocal: "Our message remains firm: if you hit our fighters, we will find you and kill you anywhere in the world, no matter how much you try to escape justice".
Saturday's offensive follows a major attack that took place on December 19, when the United States had already struck 70 sensitive sites, including weapons depots and logistical infrastructures of ISIS in central Syria.
These military developments occur in a profoundly changed Syrian political context. After the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024, the balance on the ground has shifted. Although the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) remain a historic partner for Washington, the United States is intensifying coordination with the new central government in Damascus to ensure stability and the definitive eradication of jihadist resistance pockets.
A few hours before Saturday's attacks, Syrian authorities also announced the arrest of the military leader of ISIS operations in the Levant, a severe blow to the hierarchy of the terrorist organization that seemed to have regained strength after the collapse of the previous regime.
The blood tribute
Operation Hawkeye Strike is named after the nickname of the state of Iowa ("The Hawkeye State"), in honor of the two fallen soldiers belonging to the local National Guard. President Trump reiterated that the protection of American personnel abroad remains the top priority of his administration, indicating that military pressure in Syria will not decrease until the threat of the Islamic State is completely neutralized.
