The aerospace giant SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, will receive 2 billion dollars from the United States government to develop a new constellation of satellites dedicated to tracking missiles and high-speed aircraft.
This was revealed by the Wall Street Journal, citing sources close to the White House and Congress. The funding, approved last July as part of the federal tax and spending law, had so far remained without an official recipient.

The heart of the “Golden Dome” project

The program is part of the new U.S. defense architecture called Golden Dome, launched in 2025 by President Donald Trump with the aim of creating a multi-layered shield against ballistic missiles, hypersonic missiles, drones, and other advanced aerial threats.
The system includes up to 600 satellites in low orbit – part of the infrastructure known as Air Moving Target Indicator (AMTI) – capable of real-time monitoring of any moving object in Earth's airspace.

The intent is to build an integrated network of sensors, radars, and interceptors, both terrestrial and space-based, capable of detecting and neutralizing an attack before it can hit American soil.

A program over 175 billion dollars

According to Congressional documents, the Golden Dome was formally established with Executive Order 14186 and has an initial funding estimated at 175 billion dollars. However, independent analysts warn that the total cost could exceed one trillion dollars in the long term, given the technical and logistical complexity of the project.

SpaceX, which already manages the Starlink satellite network, will provide its expertise in launching and managing large orbital constellations. Experts believe that the company may be able to accelerate development thanks to the reusability of the Falcon 9 and Starship rockets.

Technical and geopolitical challenges

The construction of an orbital surveillance network for missile defense raises numerous technological challenges and international law issues.
The ability to detect and intercept hypersonic missiles requires extremely precise sensors and reaction times of a few seconds. Moreover, the deployment of weapon systems in space risks fueling tensions with other powers, particularly China and Russia, which have already expressed concern about the militarization of Earth's orbit.

According to Reuters, Moscow has called the project “a direct threat to global strategic stability,” while Beijing has warned that “such a system could compromise the delicate balance of nuclear deterrence.”

Outlook

The Golden Dome represents one of Washington's largest technological and strategic ambitions in recent decades.
While it promises to strengthen national security with next-generation tools, it also opens an international debate on costs, ethical limits, and risks of space escalation.
For SpaceX, the 2 billion dollar agreement marks a new chapter in the partnership between the private sector and defense, consolidating Musk's company as a central player not only in space exploration but also in global security.
