From Ukraine to Italy: The Data Revolution That Is Rewriting Defense Rules

The recent meeting in Kyiv between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Alex Karp, CEO of Palantir, offers us a point of reflection that goes far beyond military news. The most surprising fact is not the assistance received, but what Ukraine has managed to build from that base: the Delta system. A platform that today, in terms of field adaptability, seems to have surpassed the original performance of Gotham, the software that Peter Thiel's company had provided at the beginning of the conflict.

For Italy and for the whole of Europe, this scenario poses a fundamental question: how can we integrate these new technological frontiers into our defense model so as not to remain spectators of an epochal change?

From External Support to Internal Innovation

The Ukrainian experience shows that adopting tools like Palantir is not an endpoint, but an accelerator of skills. The Gotham platform played a crucial role, aggregating heterogeneous data — from commercial satellites to thermal sensors — and allowing targets to be identified in minutes. However, the real added value was the ability of local engineers not to limit themselves to using a "turnkey" package.

Developed with NATO support, the Delta system is the result of field learning that no simulator can replicate. This teaches us that foreign technology, if managed correctly, can become the fertile ground on which to grow one's own digital defense industry.

The Role of the "Data-Room" and the New Knowledge Economy

Starting this year, with the launch of the Brave1 Dataroom, Ukraine has made the leap from user to producer of intelligence. By providing real datasets — based on thousands of drone interceptions and authentic combat scenarios — Kyiv is creating a resource unmatched in the NATO world.

This is where Italy can find inspiration. Rather than looking skeptically at the entry of large technological players into the defense sector, we could consider these tools as enabling infrastructures. Otherwise, the risk is to remain anchored to excellent operational procedures but based on standards of a past era, less responsive to the speed of modern data-driven conflicts.

Towards a Necessary Modernization

Today's reflection on defense is not just about physical means, but the ability to manage information. Italy possesses engineering and academic excellence of the highest profile; the challenge is to create the regulatory and strategic context so that these resources can interact with the most advanced data analysis and AI technologies.

Instead of fearing technological dependence, the Ukrainian case suggests that it is precisely through collaboration with industry leaders that one can acquire the "knowledge of use" necessary to develop one's own sovereign solutions.

The reconstruction of the future will not only pass through physical works, but through a country's ability to be a protagonist in the global digital ecosystem. For Italy, opening up to these technologies does not mean giving up sovereignty, but acquiring the necessary tools to protect it in an ever-faster world.
