France Leads Innovation in Artificial Intelligence for Defense

During the Summit for Action on Artificial Intelligence, held on February 10 and 11, 2025, in Paris, the Minister of the Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu outlined France's vision in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) applied to defense. He emphasized the importance of European and global leadership in this sector, highlighting investment in advanced infrastructure and collaboration between academic and military institutions.

France stands out for its ability to design, produce, and master advanced weaponry and military technologies internally, the possibility to train top-level engineers and researchers in theoretical and applied mathematics, essential for the development of advanced algorithms, and finally, the latest generation computing skills in classified environments. These elements give the country a prominent position in the global race for military AI.

Applications and Implications of AI in Defense

AI finds multiple applications in the defense sector: from strategic planning to logistics, from training simulation to cyber defense. Particular attention is given to assisted or autonomous weapon systems, which raise ethical and sovereignty issues.

Minister Lecornu highlighted the need to establish a clear doctrine and solid ethics for the use of AI in the military field. He stressed the importance of maintaining human control over critical decisions and avoiding excessive reliance on technology, which could lead to an uncontrolled "rush forward."

Investments and Collaborations for the Future

On March 4, 2025, Minister Lecornu inaugurated the research center of the Agence ministérielle pour l'intelligence artificielle de défense (AMIAD) at the École polytechnique. On this occasion, an investment of 15 million euros was announced for the construction of a defense institute dedicated to AI.

During the inauguration, a memorandum of understanding was signed between AMIAD and Mistral AI, a leading French company in generative AI. This collaboration aims to develop advanced technologies to ensure France's technological sovereignty in the defense sector.
