The British defense giant BAE Systems has marked a turning point in the fight against unmanned aerial systems (UAS). Through a test conducted with an Eurofighter Typhoon, the company demonstrated the effectiveness of a cost-effective and precise solution to counter the drone threat, an increasingly central issue in modern warfare scenarios.

The Technology: The APKWS Laser Kit

For the test, standard 70 mm rockets equipped with the APKWS (Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System) laser guidance system were used. Produced by BAE Systems in the United States, this kit is designed to transform unguided rockets into precision weapons, ensuring:

  • Economic Efficiency: Cost reduction compared to traditional missiles.
  • Surgical Precision: Ability to neutralize specific threats while reducing collateral damage.
  • Versatility: Effective use against both ground and aerial targets.

Details of the Test in England

The operation was conducted by BAE Systems' development center in Warton, Lancashire. A test aircraft from the Royal Air Force (RAF) was used to successfully hit a ground target at a British military range.

"This test demonstrates a revolutionary capability and a cost-effective solution, expanding the already vast range of Typhoon armaments," the company stated.

The success against the ground target now paves the way for the next phase: testing against aerial targets. The integration of the APKWS system will allow the Typhoon to tackle swarms of drones or small aircraft without resorting to much more expensive air-to-air missiles (such as the Meteor or IRIS-T).

A More Lethal and Sustainable Future for the Typhoon

This activity, actively supported by the RAF, is part of a continuous upgrade plan for the Typhoon. The integration of low-cost precision weapons not only increases the tactical flexibility of the fighter but ensures that the aircraft remains competitive and lethal in future conflicts, where the quantity and cost of ammunition play a crucial role.

The APKWS system is already successfully employed on other platforms such as the F-16, the A-10, and various attack helicopters, confirming its reliability in real combat contexts.
