Every year, thousands of high school students face a decisive choice for their future. Alongside traditional universities, there is an opportunity of great prestige and often little known: the competitions for Military Academies, which allow one to pursue a career as an Officer in the Italian Army, the Carabinieri, the Navy, and the Air Force.
Military Academies are not just schools, but institutions of university and professional training where academic study is combined with military training, sports activities, and personal growth. From the first day, cadets become part of the Armed Forces and are trained in the values of responsibility, discipline, and service to the State.

Military Academy of Modena (Army and Carabinieri)
The Military Academy of Modena is one of the oldest and most prestigious military training institutions in Europe. It is located in the heart of the Emilian city, within the monumental Ducal Palace, a historic building of great architectural value that for centuries has been a symbol of Italian military power and tradition. Today, the Ducal Palace houses university classrooms, accommodations, sports facilities, and spaces dedicated to training.
The Academy trains Officers of the Italian Army and the Carabinieri through a five-year study program, at the end of which a university degree and the rank of Second Lieutenant are obtained. The competition is open to students with Italian citizenship who have obtained, or are about to obtain, a secondary school diploma and fall within the age limits established annually by the announcement.
The selection process is complex and aims to assess not only the candidates' academic preparation but also their physical, psychological, and motivational abilities. The competition includes a pre-selection written test with quizzes on general culture, logic, and mathematics, followed by physical efficiency tests, thorough medical examinations, aptitude tests, and motivational interviews, as well as an oral exam on the subjects indicated in the announcement. At the end of the training program, Officers take on command and operational and institutional responsibilities at the national and international levels.

Naval Academy of Livorno
The Naval Academy of Livorno is the training center for Officers of the Navy. The institute is directly overlooking the sea and is part of a vast modern architectural complex, equipped with port infrastructures, training ships, gyms, and sports facilities, allowing cadets to experience the maritime environment daily.
The competition is aimed at graduate students, particularly those from scientific and technical backgrounds, with Italian citizenship and specific psycho-physical fitness for life at sea. The selection process includes a written test with questions on mathematics, logic, general culture, and English, followed by physical tests that also include swimming, thorough medical examinations, and aptitude tests with individual interviews. An oral exam on the subjects indicated in the announcement is also foreseen.
Within the Naval Academy, cadets can undertake various training paths, including that of General Staff, Naval Engineering, and Maritime Military Commissariat, preparing for a career that can take place both on board naval units and in technical, logistical, and managerial fields.

Air Force Academy of Pozzuoli
The Air Force Academy of Pozzuoli, located in the province of Naples, stands in a panoramic position overlooking the Gulf of Pozzuoli. The Academy complex is modern and highly specialized, equipped with technological classrooms, sports facilities, health structures, and areas dedicated to flight training and physical preparation.
The institute trains Officers of the Air Force, with particular attention to scientific and technological disciplines. The competition is open to students with a high school diploma, preferably from a scientific background, who fall within the age limits provided and present excellent psycho-physical conditions.
The selection tests are among the most rigorous: they include a pre-selection written test with mathematics, physics, logic, and general culture, physical endurance tests, very strict medical examinations — especially for candidates for piloting roles — psycho-aptitude tests and interviews, as well as oral exams on technical-scientific subjects. The main professional opportunities include the role of military pilot, that of aeronautical engineer, and various technical and logistical assignments.

An Opportunity to Consider Already During High School
The competitions for Military Academies are generally published every year and represent a concrete alternative to traditional universities. Admitted cadets follow a university study program, undergo training activities, and receive a salary, with board and lodging guaranteed by the State.
For a high school student, early information is essential. Focusing on academic preparation, maintaining good physical shape, and reflecting on personal motivation can make a difference. Choosing a Military Academy means embarking on a challenging path but building a future based on competence, discipline, responsibility, and service to the Country.
